Craft Business Reports

Getting Published: Get Your Ideas, Designs, Books and Articles in Print!

Following the success of my classes, Making Money with Quilting, students requested more information about how to get published in the quilting and crafting world.

For this report, I have drawn from my writing experience which runs the gamut from my first published article that earned me $20 to six full-length books for the trade.

A book for the trade may appear in libraries, shops and online book stores or sold by book clubs or translated into other languages too as mine have been.

What is involved in writing a book?  It means writing 75- 85,000 words, including a Table of Contents, Introduction, Foreword, Dedication, Chapter Outlines and Resource chapters in addition to your text---the heart of your book.

Please note that I am not only talking about a pattern book published primarily for the quilting or craft industry, but one with a broader market as well  All six of my books are categorized as "Small Business Books."

Sound intimidating? Then consider starting as I did, with small, simple articles then work your way up the publishing ladder, learning as you go. Why not start with a pattern book featuring your designs and those of others, in addition to instructions and technical information about your methods? Is self-publishing for you or do you want to know more about royalty publishing? Begin with writing about what you know and what you love.
